Although olive oil has been used to anoint the human body for thousands of years without any apparent ill effects,(1) tests carried out at New York University showed that olive oil actually had a harmful effect when applied to the skin of rats, causing swelling, proliferation of cells and a great shedding of large, loose flakes of skin!
